Bart Michiels was born and raised in Belgium. At the age of 23, he moved to New York City after studying and graduating in Photography from Sint Lukas College of Art and Design.
He won The Project Competition's First Prize (Santa Fe) in 1995 for Riverworks, one of three components in Southern Trilogy, his extensive survey and documentation of the American South during the early and mid-nineties.
In 2001, he began to work on The Course of History which was selected for The Art and Commerce Festival exhibition in 2004 and made Michiels a finalist for The Santa Fe Prize for Photography in 2006 and for the HSBC Prix de la Photography in 2010.
His work is represented by 51 Fine Art Photography in Antwerp and by Foley Gallery in New York and is part of several museum and private collections. He lives and works in New York City.
